SpringShoulder season

Bhutan in May

Last clear month before monsoon — warm and lush.

May is the last reliable spring month before the summer monsoon arrives. Mountain views are still clear, valleys are green, and pricing softens slightly as the peak season tapers. A great window for travellers with date flexibility — you get April's beauty without April's full peak premium.

Best for

Travellers who couldn't fit in April but still want spring conditions. Hikers — high passes are clear, wildflowers are out, and the trails are quieter than peak.

Caveats

Late-May afternoons can be cloudy, especially in central Bhutan. Punakha is hot enough that a midday rest is helpful.

What to pack for May

Light layers including a t-shirt for warmer afternoons
Light rain jacket (mid-late May can see brief showers)
Hiking shoes
Insect repellent (lower valleys)
Sunglasses and sunscreen

Pricing in May

May is shoulder season — pricing sits between winter lows and autumn/spring peaks. 2–3 months booking lead time is comfortable. See our full Bhutan cost breakdown for what's included and excluded.
