When Should You Visit Bhutan?
Bhutan is a year-round destination, but each season offers a distinctly different experience. The best time to visit depends on what you want to see, your budget, and your tolerance for crowds.
Spring (March to May) - Peak Season
Spring is arguably the most popular time to visit Bhutan, and for good reason:
Weather: Temperatures range from 15-20°C (59-68°F) in the valleys, with clear skies and excellent visibility for mountain views.
Highlights:
- Rhododendrons bloom across the hillsides in spectacular displays of pink, red, and white
- Perfect conditions for the Tiger's Nest hike
- Several major festivals including Paro Tshechu (usually April)
- Clear Himalayan views
Considerations:
- Higher prices due to peak demand
- Book 3-6 months in advance
- More tourists at popular sites
Summer (June to August) - Monsoon Season
The summer monsoon brings rain, but also unique advantages:
Weather: Warm days (20-25°C/68-77°F) with afternoon showers. Rain usually falls in short bursts.
Highlights:
- Lush, green valleys at their most verdant
- Significantly fewer tourists
- Lower prices and better availability
- Authentic cultural experiences without crowds
Considerations:
- Mountain views can be obscured by clouds
- Some high-altitude treks may be muddy
- Occasional road delays due to rain
Autumn (September to November) - Peak Season
Many consider autumn the best time to visit:
Weather: Cool and crisp (10-20°C/50-68°F) with crystal-clear skies after the monsoon.
Highlights:
- Best mountain visibility of the year
- Major festivals including Thimphu Tshechu
- Harvest season with golden rice paddies
- Comfortable hiking conditions
Considerations:
- Very high demand - book 6+ months ahead
- Premium pricing
- Popular trekking routes can be busy
Winter (December to February) - Low Season
Winter offers a unique perspective on Bhutan:
Weather: Cold in the mountains (0-10°C/32-50°F), milder in valleys. Snow at higher elevations.
Highlights:
- Lowest prices of the year
- Very few tourists
- Black-necked cranes in Phobjikha Valley
- Clear skies and excellent visibility
Considerations:
- Some high passes may be closed
- Shorter days
- Cold temperatures require warm clothing
Festival Timing
Bhutan's festivals (tshechus) are incredible cultural experiences featuring masked dances, traditional music, and community gatherings. Major festivals include:
- Punakha Drubchen (February/March)
- Paro Tshechu (March/April)
- Thimphu Tshechu (September/October)
- Jambay Lhakhang Drup (October/November)
Festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar and change each year. Check our festival calendar for specific dates.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors, we recommend late March to early May or late September to early November. These periods offer the best combination of weather, visibility, and cultural events.
However, if you're flexible and want a more intimate experience, consider visiting during the low season (June-August or December-February) when prices are lower and crowds are minimal.
