Frequently asked questions
How much hiking does this trip involve?
Light to moderate. Tiger's Nest (6 km round trip, 700-900m elevation gain) is the most demanding day. Phobjikha and Punakha walks are easy — 1-3 hours on gentle trails through valleys and farmland. No technical hiking or trekking gear required.
What's special about Phobjikha Valley?
Phobjikha is a wide glacial valley at ~3,000m, home to the endangered black-necked cranes that migrate from Tibet between November and February. Outside crane season it's still one of Bhutan's most beautiful valleys — quiet, agricultural, and far from the western tourist circuit. Nights are colder than Paro/Thimphu.
Is the longer trip worth it over the 7-day Essential?
If you want a slower pace, less driving per day, and to reach a valley most visitors skip, yes. The Essential journey covers the icons (Tiger's Nest, Punakha Dzong) but the western corridor only. Culture & Nature adds Phobjikha and longer rest stops in each location.
Can we add a monastery stay?
Yes — limited monasteries accept overnight guests, and your guide can arrange this on request. Expect simple shared accommodation, a 5am wake-up bell, and a unique window into Bhutanese monastic life. Best added in Bumthang or Phobjikha. Mention it when you request a quote.
How early should we book for autumn departures?
Autumn (September-November) is peak season. For October-November in particular, book 5-6 months ahead — accommodation in Phobjikha is limited and fills first. Spring (March-May) is also peak; summer/winter are easier on shorter notice.
Can we adjust plans during the trip itself?
Yes. Your guide is your concierge, not a coach driver — if you want a quieter day, swap a hike for a hot-stone bath, or extend in a valley, just ask on the ground. The fixed pieces are international flights, hotel reservations, and the Phobjikha overnight (limited beds). Everything else is flexible.
