Things to do in Bumthang

Bumthang — meaning 'beautiful field' in Dzongkha — is a wide complex of four valleys in central Bhutan, often called the country's spiritual heartland. The region has the highest density of ancient temples in Bhutan, several connected to Guru Rinpoche's 8th-century visit. Reaching it requires a long drive or a short domestic flight, which is why most visitors skip it on shorter trips.

6 things to do in Bumthang

1

Kurjey Lhakhang

A complex of three temples built around the cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century — locals say his body imprint is still visible in the rock. The site hosts the annual Kurjey Tshechu in June, an intimate festival far smaller than those in the western valleys.

2

Jakar Dzong

The 'Castle of the White Bird' sits on a ridge above the main Chamkhar valley, named for an auspicious white bird that landed on the site. One of the largest dzongs in Bhutan and the administrative centre for the region. Best photographed from the valley below in morning light.

3

Jambay Lhakhang

Built in 659 CE — one of the two oldest temples in Bhutan (the other is Kyichu in Paro), reportedly constructed in a single day. Hosts the famous Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival in October, including the night-time Mewang fire ceremony where dancers leap through a burning archway.

4

Tamzhing Monastery

Founded in 1501 by the religious treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa, with murals he painted himself still visible inside. A heavy iron chainmail vest sits in the inner sanctuary — pilgrims circle the temple wearing it as a cleansing practice.

5

Burning Lake (Mebar Tsho)

A small dramatic gorge where Pema Lingpa is said to have dived into the water with a burning butter lamp and emerged with a religious treasure, the lamp still burning. Prayer flags drape the rocks above the pool. Short visit — combine with Tang Valley.

6

Tang & Ura Valleys

Two side valleys to the east of central Bumthang, each more rural and traditional than the next. Tang has Pema Lingpa's family home (now a small museum) and Ura is Bhutan's highest village (3,100m), known for its sheep and stone houses. Day trips from Jakar.

Best time to visit Bumthang

March–May and September–November. Winter is cold and many roads can close briefly with snow. The Jambay Lhakhang Drup (October) and Kurjey Tshechu (June) are the festival highlights.

Where Bumthang fits in your trip

Bumthang is the eastern end of most central-Bhutan trips. Reaching it adds 2 days of driving each way (or one short flight), so plan at least a 10–12 day trip if you want to include it. Pairs naturally with Phobjikha on the way out and back.
