Frequently asked questions

Which festival should I choose?

Paro Tshechu (March 29 - April 2, 2026) is the most famous — five days, the giant Thongdrel unveiling at dawn on the final day. Thimphu Tshechu (September 21-23, 2026) has the largest attendance with the easiest logistics. Punakha Dromchoe (February 24-26, 2026) is smaller and more intimate. Kurjey (June 24, 2026) is remote and authentic. See our full festival calendar for all options.

How early do I need to book a festival tour?

4-6 months ahead, minimum. Festival weeks have limited accommodation in the host town (Paro for Paro Tshechu, Thimphu for Thimphu Tshechu, etc.) and hotels fill before any other travel logistics. Permits also take time. The earlier you commit dates, the more flexibility you have on hotel tier and length.

Can I extend the trip beyond the festival?

Yes — most travellers add 3-5 days either before or after the festival to reach Punakha, Phobjikha, or Bumthang. Tell us your interests when you request a quote and we'll propose an itinerary that fits the festival dates plus extended travel.

Is photography allowed at the festival?

Yes for outdoor masked dances and processions — generally without flash. Some indoor temple ceremonies and the dawn Thongdrel unveiling have specific restrictions which your guide will indicate. Ask permission before photographing locals close-up.

What's the difference between Drubchen and Tshechu?

Drubchen is the sacred prayer ritual (solemn, attended mostly by devout locals). Tshechu is the public masked-dance festival (vibrant, attended by tens of thousands). Thimphu Drubchen runs Sept 17-19, 2026 and Thimphu Tshechu Sept 21-23 — they happen back-to-back at the same venue, so you can attend both on a single trip.

Can we adjust plans during the trip itself?

Yes — outside the festival days themselves, your guide is your concierge. If you want a quieter morning, an extra hike, or to swap an activity, just ask on the ground. The fixed pieces are international flights, hotel reservations, and the festival dates and venue. Everything else is flexible.
