Bhutan tours from the UK

No direct flights from the UK to Bhutan — routes typically transit via Delhi, Dubai, Doha, or Bangkok. Travel time is shorter than from the US (18–25 hours one way), and Gulf carriers offer competitive economy fares. Pricing on the ground is in USD — budget roughly £0.78–£0.82 per dollar at booking.

Getting to Bhutan from the UK

Gulf carriers (Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha) offer the most comfortable transit experience but require an additional Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines connection to Paro. Routing via Delhi is often cheapest and offers the most Druk Air connections per week. Add a buffer day in your transit city if connections are tight — Paro Airport closes in poor weather.

Common routes
  • via Delhi (DEL)
  • via Dubai (DXB)
  • via Doha (DOH)
  • via Bangkok (BKK)

Visa

$40 USD (one-time, non-refundable)

UK passport holders need a tourist visa, processed online by us. The visa authorisation letter is emailed before travel; the visa is stamped on arrival at Paro. No embassy visit required.

Sustainable Development Fee

$100 USD per adult per night through Aug 31, 2027 (concession rate)

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a Bhutanese government charge — currently $100 per adult per night (concession rate, confirmed through Aug 31, 2027; the underlying rate is $200), separate from your tour cost. A 7-day trip pays $700 SDF per adult. Children 5–11 are charged $50/night; under-5s are waived.

Best time to visit from the UK

October–November is the best window — peak conditions, fewer crowds than spring festivals, and aligns with UK half-term breaks. April–May is the spring alternative around Easter holidays. Avoid August (UK summer holidays drive Indian-subcontinent flight prices up and Bhutan is mid-monsoon).

Recommended trip length

10–14 days. The 10-day Culture & Nature Escape is the most popular for UK visitors using two weeks of annual leave. A 7-day trip works for those tight on time but feels rushed given the long-haul flight.

Practical tips for the UK travellers

Routing via Delhi often gives the cheapest fares; via Dubai or Doha is more comfortable
Build a buffer day in your transit city — Paro is weather-sensitive
All trip costs are quoted in USD; check your card's foreign transaction fees
Travel insurance with medical evacuation is mandatory
UK passports need 6+ months validity past return date
Tipping is expected — budget £100–160 cash per traveller for guide/driver
