Bhutan in January
Cold, clear, quiet — winter at its calmest.
January is Bhutan's quietest month for tourism. Mornings are frosty, afternoons are bright, and the Himalayas are at their crispest — the off-season trade-off is cold nights and a few high passes that close briefly with snow. If you don't mind layering up, you get the country mostly to yourself at the lowest prices of the year.
Weather in January
Paro and Thimphu hover around -2 to 12°C (28–54°F). Sunny days, freezing mornings, no rain to speak of.
Punakha is the warmest part of the western circuit at this time — 5 to 18°C (41–64°F). Many travellers prefer it as their main base in deep winter.
Bumthang and Phobjikha are properly cold (-5 to 8°C / 23–46°F). Some homestays have minimal heating; pack a warm sleeping bag liner if you're sensitive to cold.
Festivals in January 2026
Best for
Travellers who want clear Himalayan views, photogenic snow on the high peaks, and an uncrowded Tiger's Nest hike. January is also the cheapest month to visit — accommodation, hotel tier upgrades, and even tour rates often run 10–20% lower than peak season.
Caveats
Phobjikha and Bumthang are cold enough that some homestays close. The Trongsa-Bumthang road can occasionally close briefly after heavy snow.
